I wanted to beat the game for years, but I only really got started on the Gold Edition after years of not playing anything at all. I don't know if the Gold Edition is better (probably not) but I love the fact that when you beat the game they even give you The Settlers. So what I did was beat the game, once or twice or ten times, and kept the Gold Edition extras with me. I found that by being self-motivated and not playing it at all for years, I was at a point where the game was almost impossible for me without the Gold Edition. And I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Some people prefer playing AI opponents in the original game. When I did, I found that there were far, far more challenging AI opponents in the Gold Edition. You can get the AI to get into the Byzantine style of play, and that makes a big difference.
